179 JOURNALISTS KILLED IN 2024, 3 in 2025
140 media workers killed in 2023 – 116 killed in 2022 – 79 in 2021 – 92 in 2020 – 75 in 2019 – 117 in 2018 – 99 in 2017 – 156 in 2016 – 135 in 2015 – 138 in 2014 – 129 in 2013 – 141 in 2012 – 107 in 2011 – 110 in 2010 – 122 in 2009 – 91 in 2008 – 115 in 2007 – 96 in 2006
1158 MEDIA WORKERS KILLED IN TEN YEARS (2015 to 2024), 115 annually on average, 2,225 per week
LIST OF VICTIMS BELOW
NOTE: The PEC includes in its statistics murders among journalists, media employees, correspondents, freelances, cameramen, sound technicians, technicians, photographers, producers, media administrators. The figures do not register casualties among other media employees like guards, security staff, drivers. We do not include occasional media activists, bloggers, net-citizens. Sources are PEC members, news agencies, local media, national press associations, IFJ, Unesco, NGOs. The list of media workers’ casualties is updated on a monthly basis since the first session of the UN Human Rights Council June 2006.
We differentiate casualties between four categories: (T) for journalists intentionally targeted, (A) for journalists killed accidentally, i.e. in a terrorist blast or in cross-fire in fightings – private circumstances and road accidents are excluded – (C) for criminal causes (i.e. killed by drug traffickers) and (O) for other or unknown causes. The category changes when there are new findings.
PEC figures are higher than those of other organizations because the PEC considers all media workers killed, wether it is work-related or not. It is, in fact, difficult to determine the causes of death and to prove that a crime is related or not to the work of the journalist, for accounts can vary highly depending on the sources, in the absence of independent and full investigations.
We indicate for each case the name of the journalist, the media organization, the location of the murder, the country and the date. Editor in charge: Blaise Lempen (for remarks send an e-mail to: [email protected])
